conservation at it’s best
Univeristy of Glasgow, Hillhead Street, Glasgow
JWSG Associates was appointed by WSP to act as Conservation Architect on a detailed condition survey of several Victorian tenement buildings on Hillhead Street, in the heart of Glasgow’s West End. This area, known for its dense and characterful sandstone streetscapes, forms a vital part of the city’s architectural heritage.
Our role focused on undertaking a comprehensive external stonework survey, assessing the physical condition and integrity of the façades, including weathered detailing, historic repairs, and areas of significant stone decay. Working closely with structural engineers and surveyors, we documented and analysed the material condition of the original ashlar and rubble sandstone, identifying both urgent defects and long-term conservation needs.
In addition to technical assessment, we provided strategic conservation guidance, ensuring that any proposed remediation work aligns with the character and significance of the buildings, many of which form part of the Hillhead Conservation Area. Our approach balanced the need for effective stone repair with the preservation of historic craftsmanship, surface finishes, and the building’s contribution to the wider urban setting.
We obtained the client's planning permission for a solution that worked both for the client’s financial restrictions and met with applause from the local planning and conservation officers.
Works are due to start on site with Morris and Spottiswood, with JWGS Associates monitoring the works throughout.
