  • Managing Director - BA, Dipl. Arch, CAA

    Throughout his career as an Architect and appointed Cathedral Architect, James has built up a wealth of experience working with private and public-sector clients; often securing funding and leading large project teams to deliver a range of architectural, interior and property development projects.

    Prior to forming JWGS Associates, James was a Regional Partner at Purcell, one of the UK’s largest architectural practices, where he was responsible for the management of the practice’s northern offices; Edinburgh, Manchester and Liverpool.

    Additionally, James was the Cathedral Architect at Blackburn Cathedral between 2001 and 2022. As well as overseeing the regular maintenance of the historic fabric of the Cathedral, this appointment has included the design and delivery of a £35m regeneration masterplan surrounding the Cathedral. As a result, James is regularly invited to speak at national conferences on major Cathedral development, sharing his experiences and skills.

    As Managing Director at JWGS Associates, James continues his involvement with Blackburn Cathedral as well as overseeing the running of the practice and managing projects that utilise his expertise in historic buildings.

  • Associate Director - BSc (Hons) MCIAT

    Elliot Dickson is an Associate Director at JWGS Associates. Originally from Edinburgh, he moved to Aberdeen to study Architectural Technology at Robert Gordon University, graduating with First Class Honours before returning to his hometown to begin his professional journey.

    A Chartered Member of the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT), Elliot brings extensive experience across a wide range of projects throughout the UK. His portfolio includes small-scale domestic extensions, bespoke new builds, the restoration of historic and listed buildings, and the delivery of multimillion-pound commercial developments.

    Elliot leads projects through all stages of the RIBA Plan of Work, working closely with clients to translate their vision into reality. From concept to completion, he ensures each project is delivered to the highest standard, with careful attention to detail, environmental impact, and budget.

    He has particular expertise in the sensitive refurbishment of historic and listed buildings, respecting their heritage while injecting fresh life through thoughtful and creative design.

    In addition to his design leadership, Elliot plays a key role in the digital operations of JWGS Associates. He manages the company website, oversees all IT systems, and ensures the studio stays up to date with the latest software, tools, and digital workflows. As Social Media Manager, he also leads the practice’s online communications and digital presence.

    Elliot is highly experienced in liaising with planning authorities, building control officers, and specialist consultants, coordinating collaborative teams to deliver effective, site-responsive solutions.
