conservation at its best
Clarendon Place, Stirling
JWGS Associates is appointed to deliver the full scope of architectural and conservation services for this Grade C listed villa in the heart of Stirling’s prestigious Kings Park Conservation Area. Our work encompasses the careful balance of heritage sensitivity and contemporary design to preserve and enhance the building’s unique character.
Originally designed by John Allan in 1895, the property forms part of an outstanding Victorian villa development, celebrated for its cohesive character and remarkably few later additions. The listing describes an idiosyncratic corner-site villa combining 2-storey, attic, single-storey, and mansard-roofed elements, with distinctive snecked rubble masonry and rock-faced window dressings. Key architectural features include splayed and canted bays, a columned porch with a stilted lintel, and unusual five-pane glazing to the upper sashes—details that mark Allan’s distinctive style.
The Category C listing (1978) notes some pre-listing alterations, including changes to the dormers on the mansard roof and modifications to ground floor fenestration. These variations, alongside the building’s layered history, require a tailored conservation approach—respecting its architectural significance while addressing practical modern requirements.
Our role involves:
Heritage-led design that aligns with Historic Environment Scotland’s listing criteria and the character of the Kings Park Conservation Area.
Fabric assessment & repair strategy for traditional materials, including stonework, timber sash and case windows, and slate roofing.
Sensitive reinstatement of altered features where appropriate, informed by archival research and surviving fabric evidence.
Planning and listed building consent management, ensuring compliance with local and national heritage policy.
Integration of modern services discreetly within the historic fabric to enhance comfort and functionality without compromising significance.
Through collaborative engagement with the client, conservation officers, and specialist consultants, JWGS Associates aims to revitalise Clarendon Place as a sustainable and enduring heritage asset—retaining its architectural charm while preparing it for the next chapter in its long history.
